Digipak images

Photos and editing:
The images I've decided to use were originally screenshots from my music video. I will be using the raw footage and editing them to make them more compatible to my genre using a vary of techniques.

First I started off with choosing an image of each musician in the band which I can develop:

These images are only screenshots from my music video footage however if the rough images I create are appropriate for my final product I will be looking into creating the same effect with official photoshoot images.

I then deleted the backgrounds of the images to enable me to focus on the subject of the image and to possibly add in backgrounds at a later date:

This made it a lot easier to concentrate on adding the effect to particular parts of the image.

I then edited the curves of each photo as the lighting wasn't as I wished it to be in the original images due to the quality of the lighting in the recording studio, if these images do get replicated in an official studio there will be sufficient lighting equipment for me to recreate what i've done here on photoshop in real life:

I then experimented with the black and white effect, starting off with making the entire image black and white and seeing what result this gave:

I was happy with these results but I wanted to experiment further with applying the effect to certain areas.

Then I applied the effect only to the instrument to see what result it would give:

With this being such a success I felt it was only necessary to see how this looked if the effect was applied differently.

Then I reversed this effect to leave only the interments in colour:

All of these images are only a rough example which is why they are not fully finished as further editing would be necessary for the use of the final product. Comparing these to the images I will continue to make I wish to make my final decisions for my product. I like the odd use of colour in some images but still keeping them mostly black and white to stick to the conventions of the indie rock genre.

Silhouettes:

Here I took the images from above but made the members into black silhouettes. I left the instruments as they are as otherwise it can become confusing defining the difference between the person and the prop.

I like the look that theses images give. Compared to the originals edited in black and white I feel like these look more professional and connect with the indie rock genre much more. For this reason I wish to use these in the final stages of my digipak.

For the logo I have created my own instead of using the original band's logo. I have kept to the same retro theme yet interpreted it in my own way.

Digipak:
After looking at the conventions of digipak's in the indie rock genre I have noticed there are many different ways of using images within the item. This can range from photoshoots of the band, silhouettes used in their place and symbols/icons that represent the band. The ideas that I am currently most drawn to are the use of silhouettes and symbols. Although it would be relatively easy to set up a photoshoot with the band I feel like the connotations that come along with the use of silhouettes could be extremely beneficial and will represent my genre in the best way possible whilst sticking to the conventions of indie rock. I will start off by exploring photos and the editing process. I will then look at how to create my own silhouettes and iconography that can link the my genre and band that will be useable for my final product.

For this template I will be needing:

• A front image
• A poster/booklet insert
• 2 inside images, one to go behind CD insert
• Back image

Along with this I will be including the key features that i previously researched.

Promotional poster:
To complement this I will also be creating a promotional poster for my digipak that can be featured in a magazine. I have previously looked into magazines and what they consist of and have identified the features that I need to translate into my own work. In order to make it complimentary of my music video and digipak I will need to keep my current theme running throughout through using consistent colours, images and typography. This will enable the audience to recognise the genre easily and make it more appealing.

Filming updates

Day 1: Monday 2nd February 2015
Today we filmed the band for our music video. We filmed from many different heights and angles making sure that we got single close ups of each performer as well. Whilst doing the close ups of the singer in particular we shone a symbol onto his face to use it as a reflector of light onto his face. I think that this has added more effect to the overall outcome of this footage and its acts as a spotlight which will become highly effective in the editing stages. All clips recorded combined using quick cuts I feel will create a professional result in the final product.

Day 2: Wednesday 4th February 2015
Today we filmed some narrative shots for our music video. We covered the beach, park and home shots however some outside footage will be recorded at a later date due to the weather conditions. I plan to redo this footage the following week (Wednesday 11th February). I hope that this will enable me to get a range of shots for the narrative part expanding on what i've already got.

Storyboard

Here is the storyboard to what my final cut will look like, it is currently being shown in colour to help identify the different locations/actors/props however in the final cut this will all be in black and white to help fit in with the conventions of my indie rock genre. In the frames which are cut into segments this is where there will be direct short clips of different parts (as shown) but it wasn't clear to see by putting them into individual frames which is why it has been set out as it has.
